Weekly update and annoucements

Update of December 19:

A number of events are of interest.

  • At least two people have birthdays this month: Eric Dollard’s  birthday is today, December 19.  James Webb’s birthday is on December 24.  We wish them all the best.
  • James Webb, Jackie Bell and Bob Patterson have undergone minor medical procedures.  We are glad they are all now fine and well.  They have our support.
  • Although we missed some people, our winter solstice party was a  joyous gathering.  Tom Crane is an excellent host and we plan to have future activities at his home.
  • Please be reminded to pay your dues and update your membership information so we can complete our member registry.

Update of November 21

  • Our co-sponsorship with Move To Amend went very well.   At least 82 persons were present and David Cobb made a rousing, well-thought-out and reasonable presentation.
  • COMING UP:  December 19th, we are planning our winter solstice party and general member meeting.  It will not be held at the UMKC campus.  Details will follow.  Keep this date open.
  • Our third-Sunday-of-the-month zero-landfill potluck is holding steady.  It is a time for socializing, having fun and enjoying good conversation.  However, there may be a problem with holding it on a University Campus.  The atmosphere does not fully lend itself to winding down and relaxation.

Weekly update of November 7

  • There is not much to report this week.  Please attend the  presentation by David Cobb we are co-sponsoring with Move to Amend.  Corporate personhood is one of the most grievous assaults on democracy however it is defined:  by the people or by the polity.  Including corporations in either case contradicts the essential meaning  of democracy.
  • The “My Turn” page on this section can be viewed as the equivalent of “letters to the editor.”  Please send me news or “letters to the editor” at lflores1@kc.rr.com.  Needless to say your letter will be subject to editorial scrutiny.
  • We still need volunteers.  For example, if you can commit to coming early to a Sunday presentation once a month, then you can help with setting up, making coffee, welcoming people and the like.  We need help cleaning up.  There are all sorts of odds and ends that we need help with.
  • We ask that everybody take a flier after a Sunday presentation and leave it at a place where others can read it.

Have a fine day,

Weekly update of October 31

  • Yesterday, October 30 was Rita Norton’s Birthday. Happy birthday. Rita is a regular COR participant. She has presented at COR and regularly contributes to our zero-landfill potlucks with savoring and healthy dishes. Again, Happy Birthday Rita.
  • If there is news you wish to appear on this update, please send it to me at Lflores1@kc.rr.com.

Weekly update of October 24, 2010

  • Congratulations to Norman Greer.  Evidently he trained and made the trek up to Pike’s Peak. We welcome the Greer family back from their trip to the Grand Canyon.  If you email Norman at ngreer@kc.rr.com, he will send you computer links to pictures they took of their trip.  The pictures show the splendid majesty of the Grand Canyon.
  • Let me reiterate that we need volunteers and think of submitting something we can publish on the “My Turn” page of this website.

Have a fine week,

Weekly update of October 17, 2010

  • Our zero-landfill potluck went well. Rita Norton brought organic tomatoes and a garlic spread that were to die for.  According to Rita, the tomatoes were “heirloom” tomatoes, which means the seeds came from plants that are more or less “original.” Also important, they came from our region, picked when ripe for picking.” You are encouraged to attend.  Our zero-landfill potluck is held every third Sunday of the month after the Sunday presentation. It is one of the best ways to nurture and sustain our community.  After all, “community” is our first name.IMG_1261
  • Soon you may be contacted by our treasurer about dues.  The year is coming to an end and dues are due.  Students are free.  Encourage your friends to attend.
  • Would you like to be a COR volunteer?  Please let us know.  We need people to do little things every so often like helping set-up and distributing fliers.   Ideally, with enough volunteers one is called upon only once or twice a month.
  • On the “member’s Corner” page, there is an item entitled “My Turn.”  If you would like to share your ideas about COR, your suggestions and hopes, please contact me.  Everything on this website is refereed.

Have a fine day,

This weekly update was written by Luis Flores, Vice president.

Other officers may write future updates.

Update of week of October 10

The big event: Last Thursday (October 7), COR was honored by Mayor Mark Funkhouser for hosting a town Hall meeting . The event took place at Northland Cathedral (101 MW 00th St., KCMO.)

Theo Schubert and Jerry Sargent were there on behalf of COR. The proclamation can be viewed by choosing “Mayor’s Proclamation,” from the menu on this page.

In the photo on the right,  Jerry Sargent presents the Mayor’s proclamation to Theo Schubert during the last COR Sunday presentation (October 10) to honor her, for her contribution to the event.

Thank you Theo

COR members Don Bell and Liz Gerber got a perfect score in a questionnaire designed to assess knowledge about religions. You may take this questionnaire at PEWforums.org . Helen Gray ran an article in the Faith page of the Kansas City Star (Saturday) about the results of this questionnaire. Basically, agnostics and atheists got the highest score on this test of religious knowledge.

Congratulations Don and Liz.

Is this a clear indication you are agnostic and/or atheist?

Call to members: This Sunday, several of our public servants are giving a talk on the earnings tax. We need a larger turn out. Please attend. Please bring your friends. As Fred Whitehead would probably say, let us act as and be acknowledged as “citizens” rather than just consumers. Our zero-landfill potluck follows.  Everyone is welcome.

Update of week of September 27

Greetings.  The Sunday presentation went well.  I had the unique experience of running the camera.  Hopefully, we can find a way so members can view the presentations.

We are upgrading out website.

Week of September 19

Greetings

Our zero-landfill potluck after the Sunday presentation of September 19 went very well.  Everyone is welcome.  It is a good time to visit, break bread, connect and enjoy each other’s company.IMG_1236

I do not know how these invaders got here.  They must be gate crashers.  I will take them off of this site soon.
